Kevin Köhler

Kevin Koehler is an Assistant Professor of Comparative Politics at the Institute of Political Science. Prior to joining the Institute in January 2019, Kevin served as a Research Advisor at the Middle East Faculty of the NATO Defense College in Rome, as an Assistant Professor of Comparative Methods at the American University in Cairo and held a postdoc position at the Department of War Studies at King’s College London. Kevin received his PhD from the European University Institute in Florence in 2013.

Kevin’s research focuses on the Middle East and North Africa and in particular on civil-military relations, security dynamics, and the politics of authoritarian rule in the region and beyond. His work has focused on Egypt and Syria in particular. Kevin is also part of the SAFEResearch network, an initiative which aims at developing practical guidelines for field research in hostile environments.
