The victory in the constitutional referendum of April 2019 offered the president al-Sisi the possibility of widening the range of powers, eliminating at the same time any form of internal competition even at the same regime. At the same time, this consolidation allowed the State to increase both the level of domestic securitization aimed at containing the threats mainly coming from violent Islamist extremism, and the level of repression against the opposition. On the regional and international level, however, there are no particular changes in the register, except for a renewed diplomatic initiative towards the regional partners (Iraq and Jordan), as well as a marked Egyptian interest in the new geopolitical theaters of the eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea .
