g., drainage and deforestation). Recent studies show that although climate change has an impact on the carbon fluxes of these ecosystems, the direct anthropogenic disturbance may play a greater role. The future of these systems as carbon sinks will depend on advancing current scientific knowledge and incorporating local understanding to support policies geared toward managing and conserving peatlands in vulnerable regions, such as the Amazon where recent records show increased forest fires and deforestation.The objective of this study was to compare semen quality (sperm density, progressive motility and spermia) between long-term childhood cancer survivors and a control group of males. The second objective was to correlate the semen analysis of the survivors with cancer treatment and endocrine status. The semen quality of 143 survivors (median age, 23.6 years) was compared to 200 men (median age, 27.9 years) who had not been diagnosed with cancer. The cancer-related risk factors and gonadotrophin levels were compared. Overall, 65% of the survivors had abnormal semen analysis compared to 26.5% of the controls (p less then 0.0001). Survivors with nonaspermia had lower sperm density than the controls (p less then 0.001). Other observed correlations were not significant. Survivors who were treated with alkylating agents were more likely to have abnormal semen analysis (p less then 0.008). Follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinising hormone levels were significantly elevated (p less then 0.0001) in survivors with abnormal semen analysis. The semen quality parameters, except for low sperm density, did not differ in survivors with nonaspermia compared to the controls. The risk factors included treatment with alkylating agents. Elevated gonadotrophin levels correlated with abnormal semen analysis. All cancer survivors should be made aware of the possibility of suffering from cancer treatment-related infertility.

Cardiac time intervals can assess the myocardial performance index (MPI), which quantifies the proportion of time spent contributing effective myocardial work. We hypothesized that MPI associates with coronary artery lesions detected by cardiac computed tomography (CT) in patients suspected of coronary artery disease (CAD).

We investigated patients referred for cardiac CT under suspicion of CAD who had an echocardiogram performed. Curved m-mode tissue Doppler imaging was used to measure cardiac time intervals and MPI. The outcome was coronary artery lesions, defined as a calcium score>400 and/or coronary artery stenosis (>70% luminal narrowing). Logistic regression was applied with multivariable models including (a) SCORE chart risk factors and (b) SCORE chart risk factors, body mass index, dyslipidemia, familial history of CAD, diabetes mellitus, LVEF, and left ventricular mass index.

Of 404 patients, 41 (10%) had a coronary artery lesion. Overall, 42% were male, mean age was 58years, and LVEF was 58%. Patients with coronary artery lesions exhibited higher MPI than those without (0.52 vs. 0.44, P<.001). MPI associated with coronary artery lesions in unadjusted analyses (OR=1.69 [1.30-2.19], per 0.1 increase), and this association persisted when adjusted for SCORE chart risk factors (OR=1.55 [1.16-2.07], P=.003, per 0.1 increase), and additional risk factors (OR=1.64 [1.11-2.41], P=.013, per 0.1 increase).

He underwent pre-procedural screening for thromboembolism risk with transesophageal echocardiogram. He had an incidental finding of a rare fenestrated membrane overlying his left atrial appendage. Additional workup throughout his clinical course revealed genetic mutations in the LMNA and SNTA1 genes. There have been no previous reported genetic mutations reported in cases with LAA membranes.Lung ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury is a common clinical pathology associated with high mortality. Ferroptosis, a novel mode of cell death elicited by iron-dependent phospholipid peroxidation, has been implicated in ischemic events. Acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain family member 4 (ACSL4) is one of the main enzymes in pro-ferroptotic lipid metabolism. In this study, the involvement of ferroptotic death in different durations of reperfusion was evaluated by assessing the iron content, malondialdehyde, and glutathione levels, ferroptosis-related protein expression, and mitochondria morphology. The roles of ferroptosis-specific inhibitor, liproxastin-1 (Lip-1), and ACSL4 modulation in a preventive regimen were assessed in vivo and in vitro. The hallmarks of pulmonary function, such as histological lung injury score, wet/dry ratio, and oxygenation index, were evaluated as well. Results showed that lung IR increased the tissue iron content and lipid peroxidation accumulation, along with key protein (GPX4 and ACSL4) expression alteration during reperfusion. Pretreatment with Lip-1 inhibited ferroptosis and ameliorated lung IR-induced injury in animal and cell models. In addition, administering ACSL4 inhibitor rosiglitazone before ischemia diminished the ferroptotic damage in IR-injured lung tissue, consistent with the protective effect of ACSL4 knockdown on lung epithelial cells subjected to hypoxia/reoxygenation. Thus, this study delineated that IR-induced ferroptotic cell death in lung tissue and ACSL4 were correlated with this process. Inhibition of ferroptosis and ACSL4 mitigated the ferroptotic damage in IR-induced lung injury by reducing lipid peroxidation and increasing the glutathione and GPX4 levels.Growing evidence points to a critical involvement of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia (SZ). Decreases of perineuronal nets (PNNs) and altered expression of chondroitin sulphate proteoglycans (CSPGs) in glial cells have been identified in several brain regions. GWAS data have identified several SZ vulnerability variants of genes encoding for ECM molecules. Given the potential relevance of ECM functions to the pathophysiology of this disorder, it is necessary to understand the extent of ECM changes across brain regions, their region- and sex-specificity and which ECM components contribute to these changes. We tested the hypothesis that the expression of genes encoding for ECM molecules may be broadly disrupted in SZ across several cortical and subcortical brain regions and include key ECM components as well as factors such as ECM posttranslational modifications and regulator factors. Gene expression profiling of 14 neocortical brain regions, caudate, putamen and hippocampus from control subjects (n = 14/region) and subjects with SZ (n = 16/region) was conducted using Affymetrix microarray analysis.
