Tissue factor (TF), an integral membrane protein, is by far the most potent known triggering agent of blood coagulation. Inspired by TF’s effectiveness in initiating coagulation, this work aims to develop hemostatic materials with TF-integrated liposomes, which combined with alginate biopolymers are designed as composite pastes or hydrogels cross-linked with Ca2+. Fluorescence measurements revealed that the proteoliposomes were evenly distributed within alginate matrices, which also remained intact after release into simulated body fluid. The proteoliposome release rate from the composite pastes increased with the decrease of alginate concentration from 3% to 1%, or relative to the corresponding hydrogels. The latter also showed a swelling property. The combination with alginate enhanced TF procoagulant activity, and most importantly the resultant composites exhibited superior hemostatic performance, yielding a shortest blood clotting time of 1.5 min while untreated blood took 14.2 min to clot, with no cytotoxicity against mammalian cells.Organic-inorganic antibacterial materials chitosan@silver/sepiolite (CTs@Ag/Sep) was prepared by grafting organometallic chelate of chitosan and silver on sepiolite. The prepared samples were characterized, and their antibacterial properties were detected. The carrier sepiolite was beneficial for the thermal stability of the composite material. The utilization of silver was enhanced and its amount of usage could be obviously reduced by introduction of nontoxic chitosan which was benefical for the formation of highly dispersed silver nanoparticles on the CTs@Ag/Sep by the interaction between the silver ion and the plentiful amino and hydroxyl groups on the chitosan, thus improved the antibacterial activities and stability. The average width of the inhibition zone of CTs@Ag/Sep against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Aspergillus niger were 51.8, 31.8, and 44.7 mm, respectively. The cytotoxicity of CTs@Ag/Sep was further evaluated with A549 cells, and the results indicated that it exhibited low cytotoxicity to eukaryotic cells.In this paper, several novel chitosan derivatives bearing benzenoid / heterocyclic moieties were synthesized via introducing aminobenzene and heterocyclic compounds onto carboxymethyl chitosan. The specific structures of chitosan derivatives were confirmed by FTIR, 1H NMR, and elemental analysis. Meanwhile, the antioxidant efficiencies of chitosan derivatives were assayed in vitro. In particular, all chitosan derivatives showed significant improvement in superoxide-radical scavenging activity and DPPH radical scavenging activity. Their antifungal activities against two plant pathogenic fungi (Colletotrichum lagenarium and Phomopsis asparagi) were estimated in vitro by hyphal measurement, and all products exhibited excellent antifungal activity. Besides, the cytotoxicity of them was also measured by CCK-8 in vitro on L929 cells, and all samples showed low cytotoxicity. However, the poor stability of emulsion has often been pointed out. In order to clarify the origin, the structure-property relationship of GA, especially the interfacial property at oil/water interface, needs to be investigated. Here, we tried to correlate the primary structure with interfacial property at oil/water interface. A series of structural analyses by SEC-MALLS, SAXS, etc. showed that the primary structure of GA was a disk-like star shaped nanoparticle. The dynamic interfacial tension measurement showed that GA molecules adsorb onto oil surface in 2 steps Firstly, the micron-aggregates of GA approach onto the oil surface, and then the aggregates are dissociated into nano-particles so that they cover the oil surface. Therefore, the emulsification and emulsion stability are controlled not by the property of the primary structure of GA but by the higher-order molecular network structure made of GA molecules.Hydrogels based on the polysaccharide ulvan from the green macroalgae Ulva fenestrata were synthesized and evaluated as an adsorbent for heavy metals ions and methylene blue. Ulvan was extracted from Ulva fenestrata using diluted hydrochloric acid and recovered by precipitation with EtOH. The extracted ulvan was converted into ulvan dialdehyde via periodate-oxidation and subsequently combined with gelatin yielding hydrogels. The hydrogels showed good water-uptake capacity with a maximum swelling degree of 2400 % in water and 900 % in PBS buffer. Adsorption tests of methylene blue showed a maximum adsorption capacity of 465 mg/g. The adsorption data of methylene blue followed the pseudo-second order kinetics and agreed with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity of heavy metal ions was 14 mg/g for Cu2+, 7 mg/g for Co2+and 6 mg/g for Ni2+and Zn2+ indicating that the hydrogels have a stronger affinity for Cu2+ than for Co2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+.The design of innovative pharmaceutical products, able to reach unexplored market niches, requires natural materials use with improved swelling and moisture properties. Herein, chitosan (CHT), a natural polymer, was combined with virgin coconut oil (VCO), a resource extracted from coconut kernels, to develop emulsion-based films for biomedical purposes. The film’s properties were tuned by changing VCO concentrations, and the structural, morphological, and physical properties of the films were evaluated. The CHT/VCO-based film morphology showed the presence of VCO droplets at different sizes, both in the surface and inner part.
