Results Military resident physicians earned 53% more than civilian residents while military attending physicians earned 32%-58% less (after taxes) than their civilian counterparts, varying by specialty. Military attending physicians’ negative pay differential occurred in both academic and non-academic practice environments through MGMA data. Discussion The positive pay differential in military residency does not compensate for the negative pay differential of military attending physicians face as compared to their civilian counterparts. This negative pay differential persisted when comparing post-tax pay. Some military service benefits, such as decreased educational debt, are challenging to quantify and vary considerably between individuals. As the military seeks to reshape its healthcare force, military and civilian compensation differences should be considered.Administration of hyaluronic acid (HA) filler for aesthetic lip augmentation is a routine and common procedure with a low rate of adverse reactions. This case report documents an extremely rare complication of lip augmentation with HA leading to the development of lymphangiomas. Lymphangiomas are uncommon hamartomas of the lymphatic system. Although usually congenital, they can be acquired due to trauma, inflammation, or lymphatic blockage. They may be in the deep or superficial tissues, with superficial forms being either lymphangioma circumscriptum or acquired lymphangioma, also referred to as lymphangiectasia. Acquired lymphangiomas are typically formed by blockage of lymphatic drainage leading to dilation of the lymphatic channels. The diagnosis in our case report is acquired lymphangioma. A 27-year-old female presented with a two-year history of linear swellings in her upper lip. These lumps followed the line where HA filler had been injected four years earlier. Hyaluronidase had previously been used unsuccessfully to remove these lumps. The patient was treated with surgery to excise the lesions. Five masses were excised, and histopathological analysis displayed the presence of variably ectatic lacunae, lined by cells with CD34 expression, a lymph-vascular-endothelial marker. There were also scattered macrophages with CD68 expression in the interstices. These are typical features of a lymphangioma. The patient was satisfied with the excellent aesthetic and functional outcome. To our knowledge this is the first case of a lymphangioma following HA lip augmentation. learn more Although rare, this complication can have aesthetic implications for the patient which may require further treatment or surgery to correct.PHACE syndrome is a rare disorder of vasculogenesis that occurs during the first trimester of pregnancy. The disorder commonly presents with posterior fossa brain anomalies and coarctation of aorta/arterial anomalies and is predominantly seen in female patients. Herein, we report a male child with PHACE syndrome who had several less common features such as cortical dysplasia, retinal degeneration, and microphthalmia. The diagnosis of PHACE syndrome was confirmed based on revised diagnostic criteria and by the presence of one major criterion and two minor criteria in addition to >5 cm haemangioma. Further, the reported child had atrial septal defect as the only cardiac abnormality, and this has been rarely described in patients with PHACE syndrome.Background and objectives Eating disorders are some of the most under-researched and difficult to diagnose psychiatric conditions, with a high mortality rate, especially among the adolescent age group. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and risk factors for eating disorders among students of a medical college hospital in South India. Materials and methods An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted among 332 students of four constituent colleges of a tertiary-care hospital selected by simple random sampling. Their height and weight were recorded. Four major questionnaires were distributed among the students – Demographic details, Eating Attitudes Test (EAT26), Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ34), and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). The results were tabulated and analyzed using SPSS software version 16.0 (IBM Corporation, Somers, New York, USA). Results The proportion of students who had a high risk for eating disorders was 13%. It was prevalent almost equally in both males and females. High risk for eating disorders was associated with high stress and severe body shape concerns (p less then 0.001). Other influencing factors were history of counselling, peer pressure, excessive exercise as well as the history of any behavioral symptoms like the use of laxatives and diet pills (p less then 0.001). Conclusions Eating disorder risk is prevalent in a high percentage of medical and paramedical students. High stress and body shape concerns are associated with eating disorders. Only if diagnosed early, with screening programs using questionnaires and further psychiatric evaluation, we can hope to mitigate the complications they incur.Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is an inherited syndrome manifested as a benign and malignant tumor. It is an autosomal dominant syndrome diagnosed approximately in 1 in 36,000 people. We report a case where male siblings presented with the involvement of bilateral kidneys and the multi-cystic lesion on the pancreas in both. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was conducted to detect the VHL gene, which turned out to be a significant finding in our study. The rare involvement of both pancreas and kidneys was noted in the siblings with VHL in the present study. In patients with VHL-associated tumour presentations, the most frequent detection of pathogenic variants in the VHL gene is the result of directed genetic testing or inherited cancer gene panels. The presence of renal and pancreatic involvement is rare but a significant finding present within the family member who needs to be screened.A 52-year-old woman developed branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) in her right eye, resulting in blurred vision with visual acuities of 6/9 and 6/6-2 in the affected and unaffected eye respectively (Snellen). The patient was successfully treated with a course of eight intravitreal aflibercept injections, improving binocular visual acuity to 6/6. During the course of her ocular management, she was admitted for acute dyspnoea secondary to interstitial lung disease (ILD). The patient was diagnosed with the antisynthetase syndrome (ASS), testing positive for PL-7 auto-antibodies. ASS may have a systemic association with BRVO; although ASS is a rare condition, it should be suspected and investigated in patients with risk factors, particularly if they present with symptoms of ILD. Early ocular intervention is associated with excellent visual outcomes, and prompt diagnosis and treatment of ASS may potentially reduce risks of further retinal vaso-occlusive episodes.
